The FCT Minister says some APC governors are unhappy with his appointment and accused them of misleading Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara during his political crisis.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has accused some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of working against him politically, alleging that they have been unhappy with his appointment as FCT Minister.

Wike made the claim on Tuesday while speaking against the backdrop of opposition from APC governors to his proposed Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Rivers State governor also accused APC governors of misleading Governor Siminalayi Fubara during the political crisis that rocked the state, alleging that they failed to secure a second term for the governor.

According to Wike, the disagreement surrounding his political activities and the Rainbow Coalition did not begin recently but could be traced to his appointment by President Bola Tinubu as Minister of the FCT.

“All these things you are seeing didn’t start today, it started with the ministerial position. They are not happy, APC Governors, that I was given the Minister of FCT,” Wike said.

The minister said the relationship between the APC governors and the Rivers State political crisis became more complicated when they allegedly intervened in the dispute between him and Fubara.

“During the crisis with my Governor, Fubara, they misled my governor. They couldn’t give the governor a second term,” he added.

Wike's comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with the Rainbow Coalition emerging as one of the political platforms attracting attention in Rivers State.

The former governor questioned why the coalition should be regarded as a problem, arguing that political leaders should not assume that their positions give them absolute control over political developments.

“Now you are talking about the Rainbow Coalition being a problem, how will it be a problem?” Wike asked.

“Most of us think that because we are governors, we are alpha and omega, anything we decide must happen, it’s not true.”

Wike further pointed to his political history in Rivers State, recalling that he was Minister of State for Education before contesting the Rivers governorship election in 2015.

He said his experience demonstrated that political office holders and incumbents could not assume that their preferred candidates would automatically prevail in an election.

“I was the Minister of State when I ran for the governorship of Rivers in 2015, I defeated the candidate of the incumbent governor,” Wike said.

The minister's remarks add another layer to the political tensions surrounding Rivers State as politicians and political blocs position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike, who governed Rivers State from 2015 to 2023, has remained an influential figure in the state's political affairs despite his appointment to the federal cabinet.

His relationship with Fubara deteriorated after the latter succeeded him as governor, leading to a prolonged political crisis that attracted interventions from political leaders and eventually resulted in a political settlement.

The latest dispute centres partly on political alignments in the state and the role of the Rainbow Coalition, with Wike defending the coalition against criticism from APC governors.

The APC governors have opposed alliances they believe could undermine President Tinubu's political interests ahead of the 2027 elections. Wike, however, maintains that governors should not assume that their decisions automatically determine the political choices of others.

The comments are likely to fuel further debate over the evolving political alliances in Rivers State and the wider realignment of political forces ahead of the 2027 elections.
