FRSC blames suspected drunk driving and overloading as rescue teams recover victims from wreckage in Ogun

No fewer than 11 people have died in a tragic road accident after a vehicle veered off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by the Ogun State Sector Command spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi.

According to the FRSC, the crash occurred late at night and involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ. The vehicle reportedly lost control, somersaulted, and plunged off the bridge.

All occupants of the vehicle—10 adult males and one adult female—were trapped inside and died at the scene.

Rescue operatives from the FRSC Itori Unit Command, supported by local residents, were immediately deployed. The team had to dismantle parts of the wreckage to recover the victims’ bodies.

The remains have since been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC point to driving under the influence and overloading as likely causes of the fatal crash.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to exercise caution, especially when travelling at night along the busy corridor. He also extended condolences to the families of the victims.

The accident adds to a growing list of deadly crashes on major highways in Ogun State, with authorities repeatedly warning against speeding, drunk driving, and carrying more passengers than permitted.
