2027 Presidency Not Favouring Igbo Candidate, Senator Nwebonyi Declares

Ebonyi North lawmaker says Peter Obi faces tough political realities as South-East shifts support towards Tinubu and the APC ahead of 2027 elections.

Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, who represents Ebonyi North Senatorial District, has declared that the current political climate in Nigeria does not favour an Igbo candidate emerging president in the 2027 general election.

The lawmaker made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television, where he spoke on the prospects of former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

According to Nwebonyi, Obi’s presidential ambition faces significant obstacles because the existing political arrangement in the country is not aligned with the emergence of a South-East candidate.

He stated that many people in the region have already assessed the nation’s political direction and adjusted their expectations ahead of the next election cycle.

“Peter Obi is coming at the wrong time,” the senator said. “Even if our son comes to contest, it is very clear that the political permutation, as it stands today, does not favour an Igbo man.”

Nwebonyi also predicted a strong showing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East during the 2027 elections.

The senator insisted that support for the APC is growing across the region, adding that many political stakeholders and voters in the South-East have already made their choice ahead of the polls.

“President Bola Tinubu and other APC candidates will win the South-East in the 2027 general election. The reasons are abundant. Igbo people have seen it, and we have taken our position,” he added.

His comments come amid ongoing political conversations over zoning, regional power balance and the possibility of another presidential bid by Peter Obi in 2027.
