Former tournaments chief succeeds Mosengo-Omba after resignation, becoming first Nigerian to hold CAF’s top administrative role
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its Acting General Secretary, marking a historic milestone for the continent’s governing body.
Adamu steps into the role following the resignation of Swiss-Congolese official Véron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down on Sunday.
His appointment, proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by Congress, was confirmed during a meeting held on March 29, 2026, at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.
Until his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organizing major continental competitions.
With this appointment, he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position since CAF’s establishment over 70 years ago—an achievement seen as a significant moment for Nigerian football administration on the continental stage.
Adamu is also the son of Amos Adamu, a former FIFA Executive Committee member and one-time Director General of Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, further underscoring his deep roots in global football administration.
