Tielemans’ 125th-minute penalty seals dramatic 3-2 victory after Red Devils rally from two goals down
Belgium produced a breathtaking late comeback to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time in a dramatic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash, overturning a two-goal deficit to snatch victory at the death.
Youri Tielemans emerged the hero, converting a decisive penalty in the 125th minute to send the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
Senegal appeared on course for a famous upset after first-half goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr handed the African side a deserved 2-0 lead. With just four minutes remaining in regulation time, Belgium were staring at elimination.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically late on. Substitute Romelu Lukaku sparked the revival, finishing from a Thomas Meunier cross, before captain Tielemans powered in a header from Leandro Trossard’s delivery in the 89th minute to level the score and force extra time.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time of extra time when VAR reviewed Lamine Camara’s challenge on Tielemans. After a lengthy seven-minute check, the referee pointed to the spot.
Tielemans held his nerve to convert, completing a remarkable turnaround and sealing Belgium’s place in the next round.
Belgium will now face either the United States or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 16, while Senegal exit the tournament despite delivering one of their most impressive performances.
