Chaos in Eastern Cape: Protesters Attack Properties Over Nigerian Igbo King’s Installation

Violence erupts in East London as anger over foreign traditional leader sparks vehicle fires and property attacks, exposing deep xenophobia tensions in South Africa.

Violence erupted in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province after protests over the installation of a Nigerian traditional leader spiraled out of control. In East London, demonstrators set vehicles ablaze and attacked buildings believed to belong to foreign nationals.

The unrest followed the coronation of Solomon Ogbonna Ezike as “Igwe Ndigbo,” a title meant to represent the Nigerian Igbo community abroad. While intended to provide leadership for Nigerians living in South Africa, the ceremony drew fierce opposition from local groups. Critics argue that recognizing a foreign king undermines local leadership and raises concerns about national sovereignty.

What began as a peaceful march against the “installation of a foreign king” quickly degenerated into violent attacks on vehicles and properties associated with foreigners. Firefighters battled multiple blazes, including trucks, panel vans, and other vehicles, while police used stun grenades and crowd-control measures to try to restore order.

Authorities have yet to release estimates of the damage or confirm arrests. The incident underscores long-standing tensions over immigration and xenophobia in South Africa, where Nigerians, Zimbabweans, and Somalis have previously been targeted amid frustrations over unemployment, crime, and economic hardship.

Investigations are ongoing, with local officials expected to review both the protest and the controversial coronation. For now, communities remain on edge as authorities work to prevent further unrest.
