Security forces disrupt ESN-linked operation targeting students in Enugu, Anambra and Imo during ongoing examinations
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), in collaboration with troops of the Nigerian Army, have foiled an alleged plot to abduct scores of students sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across parts of Nigeria’s South-East.
The failed operation, reportedly orchestrated by members of the proscribed Eastern Security Network (ESN), targeted selected schools in Enugu, Anambra and Imo states, raising fresh concerns over the safety of students during national examinations.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the DSS disclosed that the joint operation was carried out following actionable intelligence indicating imminent attacks on examination centres. Security operatives swiftly moved to neutralise the threat, preventing what officials described as a potentially large-scale abduction.
During the operation, a cache of weapons and other incriminating materials was recovered from the suspects, although details of arrests and casualties were not immediately disclosed.
Authorities commended the swift coordination between intelligence and military units, noting that the intervention averted a major security breach that could have disrupted the examination process and endangered lives.
The DSS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public spaces, particularly schools, and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
The development comes amid ongoing efforts by security forces to curb violent activities and restore stability in the South-East region.
