“First in 2022, Now Again”: Mother Loses Two Sons in Separate Police Shootings

Grieving parent recounts losing two sons in separate police-linked incidents as viral video and disputed accounts intensify calls for justice.

A grieving mother in Delta State has stirred fresh outrage after revealing that she has lost two sons in separate incidents allegedly involving police officers—an unfolding tragedy that is reigniting national concerns over police brutality.

The woman, mother of 28-year-old musician Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as OG Millan, broke down in tears while recounting her ordeal during a condolence visit by community leaders. Her emotional testimony was shared on Wednesday.

Through sobs, she disclosed that the killing of Ogidi marks the second time she has lost a son under circumstances linked to law enforcement.

“They first took my son in 2022, and now they have taken another one from me again. How do I survive this?” she lamented, capturing the depth of her anguish.

The latest incident has drawn widespread attention following the fatal shooting of Ogidi, allegedly by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, who has since been detained.

Police authorities confirmed the officer’s arrest, stating that the shooting occurred during an operation by personnel from the Effurun Area Command. According to their account, the team acted on intelligence suggesting the victim was armed.

However, that narrative has been strongly challenged after a viral video surfaced online. The footage, which has sparked public anger, appears to show Ogidi restrained and pleading moments before the fatal shot was fired.

The conflicting accounts have intensified demands for transparency, with civil society organisations and concerned Nigerians calling for a thorough, independent investigation. Many are also renewing calls for sweeping reforms to address persistent allegations of excessive force and misconduct within the police force.
