Five Killed, 10 Injured in Ogun Expressway Crash as Bus Goes Up in Flames

Five people died and 10 others were injured in a lone crash involving a Mazda bus on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway in Ogun State. FRSC blames speeding and overloading.

Tragedy struck along the Abeokuta–Lagos Expressway on Thursday as five people lost their lives and 10 others sustained injuries in a lone road crash in Ogun State.

The accident, which occurred around 11:12 a.m. at Iyana Egbado, involved a white Mazda E2000 bus carrying 20 passengers. Authorities said the vehicle went up in flames, leaving multiple casualties.

The Ogun State spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, confirmed the incident in a statement, detailing that the passengers included six adult males, 11 adult females, one male child, and two female children.

Out of the 20 occupants, five were killed—comprising one adult male, two adult females, one male child, and one female child—while 10 others suffered varying degrees of injuries. Five passengers escaped unhurt.

Emergency responders evacuated the injured victims to the General Hospital in Ifo and Oreofe Specialist Hospital in Itori for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speeding and overloading.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, commiserated with the victims’ families and urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations. He warned against speeding, overloading, and other violations, especially during busy travel periods.

The latest crash adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways, with authorities repeatedly calling for stricter compliance to prevent avoidable tragedies.
