Super Eagles midfielder says former Everton boss restored his confidence and repositioned him into his best role after AFCON setback
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed that former Everton manager Frank Lampard played a decisive role in reviving his club career during one of its most difficult periods.
Iwobi said Lampard rescued him from the brink of a loan exile following a turbulent spell that included a red card at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The midfielder recalled returning to Everton after being sent off in Nigeria’s round-of-16 defeat to Tunisia, only to be informed by then-manager Rafa Benítez that he would be sent out on loan.
“There was one AFCON where I got sent off. When I came back, they told me, ‘Alex, you’re going on loan.’ That was under Rafa Benítez. I wasn’t really playing,” Iwobi said.
However, Benítez’s departure and Lampard’s arrival at Goodison Park marked a turning point. Although Iwobi was initially told a loan move was still being considered, he made it clear he wanted to fight for his place.
Lampard’s man-management approach proved transformational. While previous managers had restricted him to rigid roles on the wing, Lampard encouraged him to express himself, starting from training sessions.
The most significant change came when Lampard redeployed Iwobi into a central midfield role — a position the player says suited his strengths and allowed him to influence games more effectively.
That decision revitalised Iwobi’s career, leading to regular appearances and a noticeable improvement in his performances for Everton.
