Ghana Sack Coach Otto Addo Weeks Before World Cup After Four Straight Defeats

Black Stars in turmoil as late loss to Germany seals coach’s fate, leaving team scrambling for stability ahead of Group L clashes.

Ghana have plunged into crisis mode after sacking head coach Otto Addo just 72 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a string of poor performances that have cast doubt over the team’s competitiveness.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed Addo’s dismissal shortly after the Black Stars suffered a 2–1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart — their fourth consecutive loss. The result came on the heels of a humiliating 5–1 thrashing in Austria, intensifying pressure on the technical crew.

In a brief statement, the FA said it had “parted ways” with Addo with immediate effect, signalling a dramatic shake-up at a critical stage of preparations.

Ghana now face a race against time ahead of the World Cup, where they are drawn in Group L alongside England, Panama and Croatia. A high-stakes encounter against England on June 23 looms large, making the search for a new coach urgent and decisive.

Germany snatched victory late through Deniz Undav’s 88th-minute strike, compounding a miserable run that also includes defeats to Japan and South Korea.

Addo, who was born in Germany and earned caps for Ghana during his playing career, returned for a second spell in charge in March 2024. However, his tenure struggled to inspire consistency or confidence.

Despite boasting a talented squad featuring Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — a major setback that further eroded belief in the team’s direction.

Over his second stint, Addo managed eight wins and nine defeats in 22 matches, a record that ultimately proved insufficient.

He previously led the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana secured a thrilling 3–2 win over South Korea but exited at the group stage after losses to Portugal and Uruguay.

With the World Cup fast approaching and this set to be Ghana’s fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage, attention now shifts to the FA’s next move — and whether a new manager can steady the ship in time to salvage their campaign.
