From Viral Catchphrase to Major Endorsements: How a Random Line from a Nollywood Scene Became a Music Industry Phenomenon and a Career-Defining Moment.
Nollywood icon Francis Odega has lifted the lid on the viral explosion of his signature line, “Gerara here,” revealing it wasn't just a social media moment—it was a lucrative career milestone that caught the attention of music heavyweights like Olamide and even global stars like Snoop Dogg.
It started with a simple phone call and a dollar transaction. Odega recounts how rapper Olamide reached out to secure the rights to use his voice. The goal? To sample the now-legendary phrases “Gerara here” and “You don't know nothing” for Lil Kesh’s track.
"I was in South Africa at the time, and they asked if they could lift my voice," Odega explained. “I said YES.”
That "yes" would prove monumental. As the song exploded, so did Odega's catchphrase. The trend transcended the music scene, with everyone from iconic music duo Bracket to international superstars jumping on the bandwagon.
"Who no call me when 'Gerara here' was trending?" Odega laughed. “Even Bracket [with their hit 'Yori Yori'] . Even Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent reposted me.”
The viral fame quickly translated into tangible success. The actor, known for his memorable comic roles, saw a flood of endorsement offers.
"I then got a whole lot of endorsements," he revealed. "I was once Etisalat ambassador. For three years I was with them." His newfound international appeal also led to a major deal in South Africa. "I went to South Africa and did DStv adverts," he added, cementing his status as a cross-continental star.
