Kerosene Nears ₦4,000/Litre as Energy Costs Deepen Hardship Across Nigeria

NBS data shows Sokoto, Kebbi and Lagos among the most expensive, while families turn to firewood and charcoal amid soaring living costs

The cost of household kerosene has surged to nearly ₦4,000 per litre in parts of Nigeria, intensifying the financial strain on families already grappling with rising food, transport and electricity expenses.

Latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show Sokoto recorded the highest average retail price in April 2026 at ₦3,965.10 per litre. Kebbi followed at ₦3,808.75, while Lagos posted ₦3,790.90, underscoring the steep cost of the essential fuel in major and northern markets.

Other states with elevated prices include Katsina, Edo, Niger, Plateau and Zamfara, highlighting the widespread nature of the increase across the country.

In contrast, Bayelsa recorded the lowest average price at ₦1,815.40 per litre, with Kogi and Yobe also ranking among the relatively cheaper states. Despite these lower figures, many states still reported sharp increases on both a monthly and yearly basis.

The sustained rise in kerosene prices is expected to further squeeze low-income households, many of whom rely on the product for cooking and lighting, particularly in areas with limited or unreliable electricity and where cooking gas remains unaffordable.

As costs climb, more Nigerians are turning to alternatives such as charcoal and firewood, a shift that raises additional concerns about household spending, public health risks and environmental degradation.
