Human rights activist and ex-presidential candidate criticized for turning courtroom into media stage, sparking confrontation with Senior Advocate
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has sharply condemned human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore over his conduct at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, calling it a blatant disruption of courtroom decorum and an affront to the judiciary’s dignity.
In a statement issued Wednesday and signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association detailed how Sowore entered the courtroom accompanied by individuals carrying cameras and recording equipment, appearing to set up for a press briefing.
Sowore’s team reportedly treated the courtroom like a broadcast studio, with the activist moving to the inner bar, sitting on a table, and addressing national issues—despite his case not being scheduled for hearing and without legal representation.
The actions led to tensions and a confrontation with Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Musibau Adetunbi, who objected and insisted on maintaining proper courtroom conduct.
While acknowledging that courtrooms in a constitutional democracy are open to the public for transparency, the NBA emphasized that such access does not permit turning courtrooms into media stages or platforms for publicity stunts.
“Any conduct that undermines the dignity of the court, intimidates legal practitioners, or disrupts proceedings constitutes a grave affront to the rule of law,” the NBA statement read.
The association further expressed support for SAN Adetunbi and other lawyers who attempted to restore order and called on authorities to ensure courtrooms remain spaces for the orderly administration of justice, free from acts of intimidation or theatrics.
“We urge court authorities to safeguard courtrooms as protected spaces for proper judicial proceedings,” the NBA added.
