NBF Targets Six Gold Medals at 2026 Commonwealth Games

40 boxers head into national camping and assessment phase as federation begins final selection for Glasgow 2026.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has set a target of six gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, as 40 boxers prepare to enter a camping and assessment phase from which the final 10 representatives will be selected.

Speaking at the close of the five-day open trials held at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, the Vice President of the NBF, Omonlei Imadu, said the federation is determined to make a strong statement in Glasgow.

“Our target is 10 medals, six gold, while the others can come in silver and bronze. We are determined to make this a reality in Glasgow,” Imadu said.

He added that the camping phase would play a crucial role in shaping the final squad.

“We have now shifted focus to the camping phase to ensure the boxers are in perfect condition during and after the camp,” he said.

The 40 boxers heading into camp will include the 20 finalists from the trials — 10 male and 10 female — as well as 20 additional boxers, some of whom reached the semi-finals during the competition.

A total of 128 boxers — 101 men and 27 women — competed across 10 weight categories during the five-day trials.

Diaspora boxer Patricia Mbata, an African Games gold medallist based in the United Kingdom, headlined the women’s finalists, while Kenneth Anigboro topped the men’s 90kg category.

Other female finalists include Udoette Happiness (51kg), Gafar Fathia (51kg), Ajishola Kadijat (57kg), Gbadamosi Aishat (57kg), Sodipe Damilola (65kg), Ismail Abibat (65kg), Blessing Orakwe (70kg), James Queen (+70kg), and Odoka Celestina (+70kg).

Male finalists include Ogunremi Michael (55kg), Habeeb Qazeem (55kg), Abdulwahab Abdulrahmon (65kg), Saliu Ridwan (65kg), Folly Hassan (70kg), Nwoha Precious (70kg), Daniel Joshua (80kg), Sharafadeen Fawas (80kg), Anigboro Kenneth (90kg), and Abiodun Adesoji (90kg).

Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, who attended the trials, commended the NBF for the organisation of the event and expressed satisfaction with the quality of competition displayed.
