Nigerian Police Arrest Couple Over Alleged Torture of 10-Year-Old Boy

Viral video sparks outrage as authorities rescue victim, take suspects into custody and place infant in protective care

The men of the Nigeria polic officer, Anambra State Police Command has arrested a couple, Chisom Chukwukere, 30, and her husband, Chukwudi, over the alleged torture of a 10-year-old boy in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The arrests followed widespread outrage triggered by a viral video showing the young victim with severe injuries across his body. Police allege that the couple inflicted the injuries using burning plastic, leaving the child with serious burns.

In response to the incident, the Anambra State Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare intervened, taking the couple’s infant child into protective custody as part of safeguarding measures.

During interrogation, Chisom reportedly pleaded with authorities to release the infant, claiming the child was unwell and needed her attention. A circulating video captured her appeal, further fueling public reactions.

The case has drawn strong condemnation from the public, with many questioning the alleged abuse and expressing concern over the welfare of children in domestic environments.

Authorities have since placed the infant in the care of a family member under the supervision of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said investigations have been intensified to ensure justice is served.

“The police remain committed to enforcing laws that protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation and all forms of violence,” Ikenga stated.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has reaffirmed the command’s resolve to collaborate with relevant agencies, child protection bodies and community stakeholders to safeguard children’s rights and welfare across the state.
