Four suspects arrested after intelligence-led operations uncover syndicate moving young Nigerians toward Cameroon and Gabon
Akwa Ibom State Police have dismantled a cross-border human trafficking syndicate, rescuing seven victims and arresting four suspects in a series of swift, intelligence-driven operations across the state.
The breakthrough came when officers stopped a vehicle on the Ikot Ekpene–Aba Road acting on a tip-off. Four victims were pulled to safety on the spot and one suspect seized.
That arrest cracked the operation wide open.
Follow-up raids in Itam and Ibaka, deep in Oron Local Government Area, netted three more suspects and freed three additional victims — bringing the total rescued to seven.
Investigators say the syndicate ran a systematic pipeline, recruiting vulnerable young people and smuggling them across international borders for exploitation. One suspected ringleader reportedly escaped through waterways, fleeing toward Cameroon and Gabon before police could close in.
All four suspects remain in custody as investigations intensify. The Akwa Ibom Command is urging residents to report suspicious activity — warning that trafficking networks often operate in plain sight, hiding behind silence.
