Nigeria’s FCT Rolls Out Free Long-Acting HIV Prevention Injection

Over 4,000 vials of LenPrEP introduced in Abuja, offering a discreet, high-impact alternative to daily HIV prevention pills

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has launched a free long-acting HIV prevention injection, marking a significant shift in efforts to curb new infections.

Health authorities confirmed that more than 4,000 vials of the injectable medication, known as LenPrEP, have been received and will be administered at no cost to eligible residents.

The Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, announced the rollout on Tuesday during the official launch at Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja.

Fasawe described the initiative as a “game changer” in HIV prevention, particularly for individuals who face challenges adhering to daily oral medication.

“Today, we launch LenPrEP — a long-acting injectable HIV prevention option that represents a true game changer in our response,” she said. “For many individuals, especially those who struggle with daily pill adherence, this innovation offers a discreet, convenient, and highly effective alternative.”

She clarified that the injection is not a replacement for existing prevention methods such as oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condom use, and behavioural strategies, but rather an addition to strengthen ongoing interventions.

“LenPrEP does not replace oral PrEP or other prevention methods. Rather, it strengthens our prevention toolbox,” Fasawe added.

According to the FCTA, the introduction of LenPrEP aligns with a broader combination prevention strategy designed to meet the diverse needs of residents and accelerate progress in the fight against HIV in the capital.
