The 24-hour facility on Abuja’s Airport Road combines self-service fuel dispensing, EV charging, LPG, solar power and vehicle services, with NNPC targeting up to 70 similar stations across Nigeria

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has commissioned its first technology-driven self-service smart station in Abuja, marking a major step towards modernising fuel retailing and expanding access to integrated energy and mobility services in Nigeria.

The 24-hour facility, located along Bill Clinton Drive on Airport Road, Abuja, allows motorists to dispense fuel themselves while accessing a range of additional services, including electric vehicle (EV) charging, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dispensing, automated car washing and vehicle maintenance.

The station is powered entirely by solar energy, with an installed capacity of more than 200 kilowatts, highlighting NNPC’s push to incorporate cleaner and more efficient energy solutions into its downstream operations.

Speaking at the commissioning, NNPC Ltd.’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Dr Mumuni Dagazau, said the facility demonstrates the company’s commitment to deploying technology and strategic partnerships to improve convenience, efficiency and the overall customer experience.

Dagazau also commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for providing the land and supporting the partnership that made the project possible.

Under the new system, motorists can use the NNPC Retail mobile application to pay for fuel before arriving at the pump. Customers receive a code that enables them to dispense the exact quantity of fuel they have purchased, reducing the need for traditional pump-side transactions.

The smart station is equipped with 16 Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pumps and two Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) pumps, alongside six EV charging points.

Beyond conventional petrol and diesel services, NNPC Retail said the facility is designed to evolve into a broader energy and mobility hub. Plans are already underway to introduce compressed natural gas (CNG) services and establish a vehicle conversion centre at the facility.

The development comes as Nigeria continues to explore alternative fuels and new technologies aimed at reducing dependence on conventional petrol and improving the efficiency of the country’s transportation and energy sectors.

NNPC said the smart-station model is intended to transform traditional filling stations into modern, technology-enabled destinations where customers can access multiple energy and vehicle-related services in one location.

The company also disclosed plans to expand the concept beyond Abuja, with between 50 and 70 similar smart stations expected to be deployed across Nigeria within the next six months.

If implemented as planned, the expansion would significantly increase access to self-service fuel technology, EV charging infrastructure and alternative energy services across the country.

NNPC’s latest initiative reflects the changing nature of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, where digital payments, alternative fuels, renewable energy and customer-focused services are increasingly becoming part of the modern fuel-retailing landscape.
