Nwabali Dismisses NPFL Return, Prioritises Move Abroad After Chippa Exit

Super Eagles goalkeeper dismisses calls for local league comeback, says focus remains on Europe and other competitive markets

Stanley Nwabali, Nigeria’s international goalkeeper, has dismissed suggestions that he could return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as he weighs his next move following his departure from Chippa United.

The 29-year-old has been without a club since parting ways with the South African side in February after formally requesting an exit from the Eastern Cape-based outfit — a request that was granted.

Amid widespread calls from within Nigeria, particularly from former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peterside Idah, urging him to consider a temporary return to the NPFL, Nwabali made it clear that his focus lies elsewhere, especially on opportunities outside West Africa.

He noted that many players in the region are driven by the ambition to compete in more structured and financially stable leagues, identifying South Africa, Europe and North Africa as preferred destinations.

“In West Africa, our leagues are not as good. We want to go to Europe, we want to come to South Africa, we want to go to Morocco,” Nwabali said.

He added that the organisation and financial appeal of leagues abroad play a significant role in shaping such decisions.

Nwabali previously featured in the NPFL for Go Round FC, Wikki Tourists, Enyimba, Lobi Stars and Katsina United. He has recently been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, although he insists that talks about his future remain speculative.

Addressing the rumours, he acknowledged the interest but stressed that nothing concrete has emerged, noting that such reports often reflect recognition of a player’s quality rather than confirmed negotiations.

Despite concerns that his current clubless status could affect his place in the Super Eagles squad, Nwabali remains unfazed and insists he is in no rush to decide his next destination.

He emphasised that he is open to opportunities globally and will only make a move when the right offer arrives.
