Anambra Command identifies officer, launches disciplinary probe, orders drug test amid public outrage
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a senior officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Newton Isokpehi, after a viral video showed him threatening to kill anyone who attempted to film him while on duty.
The command confirmed the officer’s identity on Thursday and announced the commencement of internal disciplinary proceedings, stressing that his conduct falls far below the standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Ngozi Ezeabata, on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu, authorities said swift action was taken immediately the video surfaced online.
Isokpehi sparked widespread outrage on Wednesday after the footage circulated across X, Instagram, and TikTok, capturing him issuing chilling threats to bystanders. Speaking in Pidgin English, he warned he would “clear everybody down” if anyone recorded him, and even made remarks suggesting defiance toward any superior officer who permitted such filming.
Although the video was later deleted from his TikTok page, the backlash intensified. The officer subsequently released another clip apologising, claiming his comments were made out of frustration.
Police authorities, however, moved quickly.
“Following a prompt review of the video, the Command immediately identified and arrested the officer involved,” the statement said, confirming that disciplinary procedures have been activated in line with police regulations.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the command disclosed that Isokpehi has also undergone a drug test to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure a transparent process.
Condemning the officer’s actions, Commissioner Orutugu described the behaviour as unacceptable and damaging to public trust.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that will not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public confidence,” the statement read.
The command assured residents that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public, adding that any officer found guilty will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.
It also reminded officers of the need to remain professional, composed, and respectful while on duty, particularly in an era where their actions are constantly under public scrutiny.
The police further commended citizens and civil society groups for amplifying the incident, noting that such vigilance plays a vital role in strengthening accountability and improving service delivery.
Residents were encouraged to continue reporting misconduct and any behaviour that threatens public safety or erodes confidence in security agencies.
