Saudi Arabia Executes Two Bangladeshi Nationals Over Alleged Kissing Inside Mosque

Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry says Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar were executed in the Makkah region on October 14, 2026, following a court conviction over an offence committed inside a mosque.

Saudi Arabian authorities have executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of committing an immoral act by kissing inside a mosque in the holy city of Makkah, according to the kingdom’s Ministry of Interior.

The two individuals, identified as Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were put to death on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after their death sentences were upheld by the relevant authorities and a royal order was issued for the punishment to be carried out.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said security authorities apprehended the pair before they were formally charged and brought before a competent court.

The court subsequently found them guilty and sentenced them to death under ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law, citing the seriousness of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the mosque.

According to the ministry, the sentences passed through the required legal and judicial processes before the executions were carried out in the Makkah region.

The ministry said the offence was considered particularly serious because it took place inside a mosque, a place regarded as sacred in Islam.

Saudi authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining public security, upholding the law and protecting the sanctity of religious sites.

The ministry also warned that anyone who commits similar offences would face legal consequences under the kingdom’s laws.

The executions underscore Saudi Arabia’s strict enforcement of its laws concerning conduct in religious spaces. However, the ministry’s statement did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or the identities of the individuals beyond their names and Bangladeshi nationality.

The announcement comes amid continued international scrutiny of Saudi Arabia’s use of capital punishment and the circumstances under which death sentences are imposed and carried out.
