Note recovered at scene points to emotional distress linked to failed relationship as authorities call for stronger youth support systems
The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a 25-year-old woman in Onitsha, raising concerns about growing social pressures affecting young people.
The woman was found dead on June 18, 2026, in circumstances the police say are consistent with a possible suicide. A note recovered at the scene reportedly pointed to emotional distress following a troubled relationship.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, described the incident as deeply troubling and reflective of wider societal challenges.
According to the police, the note mentioned a man identified as Chigozie, alleging that the relationship involved multiple pregnancies and three abortions before it eventually ended. Authorities, however, stressed that investigations are ongoing to verify the claims and establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Reacting to the development, Commissioner Orutugu called for urgent attention to what he described as disturbing social trends, including declining moral values and emotional struggles among youths.
He emphasised the need for parents and guardians to take a more active role in the lives of young people, particularly in monitoring their emotional well-being, relationships, and behavioural changes.
“The situation underscores a collective responsibility for families, communities, religious bodies and other stakeholders to guide and support young people more effectively,” the commissioner said.
Orutugu also urged schools, community leaders, and civil society organisations to strengthen mentorship and advocacy programmes that promote resilience, responsible choices, and positive values.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Awka for a thorough and discreet probe.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and working with relevant stakeholders to address emerging social and public safety concerns.
