Teen rescued during anti-drug raid in Achalla as police probe network of suspects accused of exploiting minor across multiple communities
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a middle-aged man, Tochukwu Nwora, over the alleged abuse and exploitation of a 15-year-old girl in Achalla, Awka North Local Government Area.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, who revealed that the victim—now heavily pregnant—was rescued during a targeted operation by security operatives.
According to the police, the operation was initially launched following intelligence reports on suspected youth involvement in the use of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as “Mkpuru Mmiri,” in parts of the state. However, the raid led to a more disturbing discovery.
Ikenga disclosed that officers encountered the suspect in a compromising situation with the minor, prompting her immediate rescue and placement in protective custody.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the teenager may have been repeatedly abused by multiple adult males at different times across Nando, Nteje, and Achalla communities. Authorities believe the suspects took advantage of her vulnerable condition, allegedly luring her with small sums of money.
The victim has since been taken to the Police Hospital in Awka, where medical care and necessary evaluations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough probe. The investigation will also examine possible negligence or complicity on the part of the victim’s parents or guardians, while efforts intensify to track down other suspects linked to the case.
The police command strongly condemned all forms of abuse and exploitation of minors, reiterating its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue and the arrested suspect reportedly provides information to assist in apprehending others involved.
