Police in Okpoko trace and detain biological parents as community reels from shocking discovery of abandoned infants.
Residents of Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State were thrown into shock on Sunday morning, June 21, 2026, after the lifeless bodies of newborn twins were discovered dumped in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi.
The infants, reportedly wrapped in a box containing baby clothing, were spotted by passersby who quickly raised the alarm, prompting a swift response from officers of the Okpoko Police Division.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as deeply unsettling. A resident, Uche, who was among the first at the location, condemned the act, questioning how anyone could abandon newborns despite the availability of orphanages and support systems.
Another resident suggested the babies may have been abandoned by someone unwilling to take on the responsibility of raising them.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command disclosed that the biological parents of the twins have been identified and arrested. Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspects are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
According to the statement, officers acted swiftly after receiving the report—securing the scene, gathering evidence, and launching an immediate probe that led to the arrest of those responsible.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a grave violation of the value of human life. He stressed that every child deserves care, protection, and the chance to live.
The police assured that justice will be pursued to its full extent, adding that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be communicated.
