Police probe possible food or alcohol poisoning as circumstances surrounding 21-year-old’s death deepen
The mother of late Nigerian footballer Victor Udoh has ordered the arrest of his girlfriend and several friends following his sudden death in Abuja under circumstances now being investigated by authorities.
Udoh, a former Southampton and Royal Antwerp forward, died earlier this week at the age of 21. Initial reports described his passing as occurring under suspicious circumstances, prompting growing concern and calls for a thorough investigation.
According to Paris-based sports journalist Ojora Babatunde, the deceased’s mother took swift action by involving security operatives, leading to the arrest of individuals who were reportedly with Udoh shortly before his death. The arrests are believed to be connected to suspicions that the footballer may have consumed contaminated food or alcohol prior to his collapse.
While details remain unclear, sources indicate that investigators are exploring the possibility of poisoning, although no official cause of death has yet been confirmed. Authorities are expected to conduct toxicology tests and further examinations to determine what led to the young athlete’s death.
Udoh’s passing has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s football community, where he was regarded as a promising talent with international experience. Tributes have continued to pour in from fans and colleagues, even as questions linger over the events leading up to his death.
Police have not yet released an official statement on the arrests or the status of the investigation, but the case is expected to remain under close scrutiny as more facts emerge.
