Bafana Bafana captain expresses disappointment as fans back Mexico; xenophobia concerns spark debate on continental unity
South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has expressed disappointment over the lack of support from fellow African nations following the team’s 2–0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The loss leaves South Africa with plenty to do in Group A as they chase a place in the knockout stages.
Speaking after the match, Williams said he was surprised by the number of African football fans who supported Mexico rather than backing an African representative on the global stage. He called for greater unity among Africans during major tournaments.
“Africans have always supported other African countries at every World Cup, but I can’t figure out why our case is different,” he said.
“Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, South Africans. We almost shed tears. It’s truly sad. As Africans, let’s stand for each other; let’s stand together.”
While some supporters sympathised with the goalkeeper’s sentiments and agreed on the need for solidarity at international competitions, others offered a contrasting view.
Social media users from countries including Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya argued that recurring reports of xenophobic attacks on African migrants in South Africa have weakened the sense of continental unity. Several pointed to past incidents involving foreign nationals in the country as shaping how other Africans perceive South Africa.
