Belgium Hold Firm Under Spain Siege in Tense World Cup Quarter-Final

Red Devils’ resolute defence frustrates dominant Spain as relentless second-half pressure fails to yield breakthrough

Belgium came under sustained second-half pressure from Spain in their World Cup quarter-final clash but showed remarkable resilience to keep their qualification hopes intact.

As the game wore on, the Red Devils were forced deeper into their own half, with Spain monopolising possession and probing relentlessly for an opening. Despite the mounting pressure, Belgium’s defensive line stood firm.

Centre-backs Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy delivered composed and disciplined performances, repeatedly cutting out danger and denying Spain clear scoring opportunities. Their organisation and composure frustrated the Spanish attack as the contest moved into its decisive phase.

Belgium found additional stability through substitute left-back Joaquin Seys, who did well to contain Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, limiting the winger’s impact despite his constant attacking threat.

Still, the Belgian defence remained alert to Spain’s ability to conjure moments of individual brilliance at any point.

Head coach Rudi Garcia utilised all five substitutions, including the withdrawal of captain Kevin De Bruyne, leaving Belgium with no further tactical adjustments as they prioritised defensive solidity.

With Spain pressing relentlessly and Belgium pinned back, the outcome hung in the balance—would the Red Devils’ resistance hold, or would Spain’s pressure finally produce a decisive moment?
