Police tracked the 25-year-old victim through his vehicle’s tracking system and rescued him in Heathfield after his brother reported the ransom demand.

STEENBERG, Cape Town — Police in Steenberg, Cape Town, have arrested five suspects following the kidnapping, alleged rape and ransom ordeal of a 25-year-old e-hailing driver.

The victim was reportedly lured into a meeting with one of the female suspects before being abducted and held captive by a group of suspects.

According to police, the incident began last week when the driver met one of the female suspects through his e-hailing business. The pair exchanged telephone numbers and remained in contact for several days before arranging to meet.

When the driver arrived at the agreed meeting point, he was allegedly ambushed and kidnapped by a group of suspects.

Police said two female suspects allegedly raped the man while he was being held captive.

The victim’s ordeal came to the attention of the police after his brother was contacted by the suspects, who allegedly demanded R4,000 in cash in exchange for the driver’s release.

Following the ransom demand, police launched an investigation and were able to trace the victim using the tracking system installed in his vehicle.

The tracking information led officers to Southampton Road in Heathfield, where they located and rescued the victim.

Five suspects were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.

The suspects comprise two women, aged 23 and 34, and three males aged 16, 42 and 48.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the kidnapping, alleged sexual assault and ransom demand.

The five suspects are expected to appear before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 14, 2026, where they are expected to face charges arising from the investigation.

The case highlights the risks faced by e-hailing drivers, who regularly meet strangers at locations arranged through their businesses and online platforms.

Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, particularly where threats, abductions or ransom demands are involved.
