Five adult men have died after a Toyota Camry collided head-on with an Iveco truck at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop, in the early hours of Saturday.
Five persons have been killed in a fatal road crash involving a car and a truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.
The accident occurred at about 5:16am at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop, when a Toyota Camry collided head-on with an oncoming Iveco truck.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call about the crash and immediately deployed its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to the scene.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary findings indicated that the crash was linked to excessive speed and reckless driving.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the driver of the Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, reportedly lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into the Iveco truck, registered T28081 LA.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was caused by over-speeding and reckless driving on the part of the Toyota Camry driver. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane and had a head-on collision with the oncoming Iveco truck,” he said.
The impact claimed the lives of all five adult male occupants of the Camry.
“Regrettably, the impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry. The remains of the victims were carefully recovered, bagged with dignity, and handed over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further necessary action,” the statement said.
Emergency responders at the scene included personnel of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps and police officers from the Morogbo Division.
Two tow trucks were deployed to remove the wreckage and restore traffic flow along the busy expressway.
LASEMA said the damaged vehicles were subsequently taken to the Morogbo Police Division, while the affected section of the road was cleared and reopened to motorists.
Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.
He also urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads, warning against speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices, particularly during the early hours when visibility and road conditions can increase the risks of serious crashes.
He stressed that road safety remained a shared responsibility and reaffirmed LASEMA’s commitment to rapid emergency response and collaboration with other agencies to protect lives and property across Lagos.
