Two Killed, Two Injured as Trucks Collide and Burst Into Flames on Anambra Expressway

The crash occurred along the Awka-Enugu Expressway near Jezco Filling Station, with the FRSC blaming speeding and loss of control for the fatal collision.

Two people have been killed and two others injured after two commercial trucks collided and burst into flames along the Awka-Enugu Expressway in Anambra State.

The fatal crash occurred opposite Jezco Filling Station, causing significant traffic disruption on the busy highway.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra Sector Command, confirmed the incident on Friday, identifying the vehicles involved as a Mercedes 911 truck and a Mark tanker belonging to Shafa Energy. Both vehicles reportedly had no registration numbers.

According to eyewitnesses, the Mercedes truck allegedly applied its brakes suddenly while passing through a section of the expressway affected by ongoing construction.

The tanker, which was travelling behind it, subsequently rammed into the rear of the Mercedes truck. The impact crushed the smaller truck and triggered a fire and explosion.

Four male adults were involved in the crash. Two of them died at the scene, while the other two sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Good Samaritans reportedly evacuated the injured victims to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, for medical treatment.

The FRSC said efforts were ongoing to recover the bodies of the deceased, who were burnt beyond recognition.

The agency attributed the suspected cause of the crash to speeding and loss of control. It added that the dark conditions and partial closure of the road due to construction may have further increased the risk of the collision.

The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene about 10 minutes after the crash and immediately commenced efforts to manage traffic and restore movement along the route.

The Anambra Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid speeding, particularly around construction zones.

Asekhauno also called for the prompt completion and opening of the other lane to reduce the risks associated with two-way traffic on a single carriageway.
