Clashes triggered by fatal altercation spark unrest in Taura LGA as police detain suspects and launch wider investigation into multiple killings

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with separate incidents involving culpable homicide, attacks on security personnel, and violent unrest at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area, as authorities intensify efforts to restore peace across the state.

Police spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed in a statement that the market violence began on July 26, 2026, following a dispute between a soldier and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim.

The altercation reportedly turned deadly after the soldier allegedly stabbed Ibrahim, who later died from his injuries.

The incident triggered chaos in the area, during which hoodlums attacked a police station, shot bows and arrows at security operatives, and set two market shops ablaze.

Police subsequently arrested two suspects — Muhammed Muhammed, 22, and Faridu Mohammed — while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others who fled the scene.

The command also confirmed the arrest of six additional suspects over the killing of a vigilante member during the same disturbance. According to police, the suspects allegedly attacked two vigilantes with sticks and cutlasses, leaving one dead and another currently receiving treatment.

Officers also recovered six cows believed to have been abandoned during the unrest.

In a separate incident, police arrested 20-year-old Saminu Ibrahim over the alleged fatal stabbing of another 20-year-old during a dispute in Dabigel Village, Ringim Local Government Area. Investigators said the suspect stabbed the victim in the chest with a sharp object, leading to his death while receiving treatment at a hospital.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the police said a stakeholders’ meeting involving Miyetti Allah, traditional rulers, community and religious leaders, youth representatives, and other security agencies is underway to address the root causes of the Gujungu Market crisis and prevent a recurrence.

The Commissioner of Police commended officers for their swift response and assured residents that the command would continue to protect lives and property while ensuring perpetrators of criminal acts are brought to justice.

The command also urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of ongoing investigations by providing timely and credible information, stressing that community cooperation remains key to sustaining peace and security across the state.
