Midnight inferno razes one-storey commercial building in Ikeja, injures firefighter and destroys laptops and accessories

A Lagos-based trader has lost goods valued at over N150 million following a devastating fire outbreak at Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at a one-storey commercial building on Somoye Osundairo Street, with the fire reportedly starting at about 2:00 a.m., after traders had closed for the day.

Eyewitnesses said the inferno completely razed the upper floor of the building, which housed several rooms used as shops and storage spaces for laptop dealers. The intensity of the blaze caused the roof of the building to cave in, destroying all goods inside.

Emergency responders who arrived at the scene reportedly encountered access challenges and had to force entry through the rear of the building to combat the fire.

Although the exact cause of the fire has yet to be officially determined, sympathisers at the scene suggested it may have resulted from an electrical surge linked to power supply fluctuations.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the fire.

He disclosed that one firefighter sustained injuries while battling the blaze and was treated at the scene.

“Upon the arrival of the LRT at the incident scene by 2:15 a.m., it was observed that a fire outbreak had occurred in a one-storey commercial building housing computer and accessories dealers in Computer Village, Ikeja,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He added that the affected building was primarily used for storage and sale of computers and accessories, noting that the large volume of combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
