Opeyemi reportedly jumped into a river in the Agility area of Mile 12 while trying to escape men who allegedly chased and attacked him.

A man identified simply as Opeyemi has drowned after reportedly jumping into a river while attempting to escape suspected cultists in the Agility area of Mile 12, Lagos State.

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, according to a police source who spoke about the incident on Sunday.

Opeyemi was said to have been on his way to purchase an item when he was allegedly pursued by a group of men suspected to be cultists.

According to accounts from residents, the men eventually caught up with him and allegedly attacked him before he jumped into the river in an attempt to escape.

A resident who spoke about the incident said efforts by some people to rescue Opeyemi were reportedly frustrated by the men chasing him.

“We got a report that he was being chased by some people suspected to be cultists who caught him and attacked him before he jumped into the river.

“Some people wanted to rescue him, but those chasing him prevented them from doing so,” the resident said.

Opeyemi was subsequently reported to have drowned in the river.

However, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, as conflicting accounts have emerged over what led to his death.

An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, said some residents claimed Opeyemi was under the influence of a substance and jumped into the river on his own.

Others who reportedly witnessed the incident, however, claimed that he was chased and attacked before he entered the water.

According to the platform, Opeyemi was allegedly on his way to purchase drugs when he was pursued by some individuals who caught and attacked him.

The platform further reported that attempts by people at the scene to rescue him were allegedly prevented by the attackers.

“Opeyemi was described as very nice, good, and hardworking,” the platform added.

The conflicting accounts have yet to be independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the men involved were members of a cult group.

Police authorities had also yet to provide an official account of the incident.

When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said she would revert on the matter.

She had not provided a response as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by cult-related violence and substance abuse, particularly in densely populated communities where residents may have limited access to immediate emergency assistance.

Authorities are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding Opeyemi’s death and determine whether anyone will face prosecution in connection with the incident.
