Police launch investigation after Ogun woman reportedly took her own life following dispute over marriage plans.
A 30-year-old woman, Abigail Adebayo, has died in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun State after her fiancé’s family reportedly disapproved of their planned marriage.
Abigail had been in a relationship with Oniga Abiola since September 2025, and the couple were said to be making arrangements to tie the knot. About two weeks ago, Abiola reportedly took her to meet his mother as part of the marriage process.
However, the union allegedly hit a setback when his family discovered that Abigail had three children from a previous relationship and subsequently rejected the proposed marriage.
Sources said Abigail was later found unresponsive in her room after allegedly ingesting a substance believed to be a popular insecticide.
Abiola reportedly informed the Atan Ijebu Division of the Ogun State Police Command about the incident.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the woman was rushed to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to Babaseyi, detectives visited both the scene and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations.
“On 12/02/2026 Thursday, it was reported that one Abigail Adebayo, ‘F’, 30 years, allegedly ingested Sniper insecticide following a family disagreement over their intended marriage,” the police spokesperson said.
“She was immediately rushed to General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
“Detectives visited the scene and the hospital, photographs were taken and no visible marks of violence were found on the body. Investigation is ongoing.”
Police authorities say efforts are underway to fully unravel the circumstances surrounding Abigail’s death.
