Party cites equity and national balance as key reasons, as southern aspirants gear up and opposition dynamics begin to realign
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, sealing a major decision at its National Convention and setting the tone for its electoral strategy ahead of the next general elections.
The resolution, unveiled during the convention, underscores the party’s push for equity, inclusiveness, and national balance. Party leaders said the move aligns with Nigeria’s long-established power rotation principle between the North and South.
Stakeholders at the gathering stressed that ceding the ticket to the South would not only reinforce internal cohesion but also strengthen the NDC’s positioning as a viable opposition force in 2027.
“This decision reflects our commitment to fairness and national unity,” a senior party official said, noting that the NDC is focused on consolidating its base and presenting a united front.
The announcement is already sparking political interest, with southern politicians expected to begin jostling for the party’s ticket in the coming months. It was noted that the move could also trigger fresh alignments within the opposition as parties recalibrate ahead of the general elections.
The zoning decision mirrors a broader trend across Nigeria’s political landscape, where parties increasingly adopt regional balancing to address representation concerns and voter sentiment.
With the zoning debate settled, attention is now shifting to the race for the ticket, internal primaries, and the party’s wider campaign roadmap.
NDC leaders have, however, assured members of a transparent and credible selection process as preparations for 2027 gather pace.
