Operatives intercept commercial buses on Asaba–Onitsha expressway, recover tramadol, codeine syrup, diazepam and other banned substances

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Delta State Command, has arrested two suspected drug traffickers and seized a large consignment of illicit substances estimated to be worth ₦300 million.

The arrests followed a targeted operation by NDLEA operatives who intercepted two commercial buses conveying various illegal drugs along the busy Asaba–Onitsha expressway. The operation was carried out based on credible intelligence, according to the agency.

Confirming the development, the NDLEA’s Delta State Media and Advocacy Officer, Johnkennedy Edoziem, identified the suspects as Zaharadeen Yahaya, aged 25, and Sanusi Maman, aged 23. He disclosed that the arrests took place on January 15, 2026, during an operation led by the State Commander, Dr. Halilu Hamidu.

Edoziem revealed that the intercepted vehicles were found to be loaded with a wide range of prohibited drugs. Items recovered include 410,800 pills of tramadol, 84.2 litres of codeine syrup, 82,250 diazepam tablets, 900 swinol tablets, and 65 molly pills.

He added that the total street value of the seized drugs is estimated at approximately ₦300 million, describing the haul as a major breakthrough in the agency’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the state.

Commending the operatives for their professionalism and dedication, Dr. Hamidu reiterated the NDLEA’s resolve to rid Delta State of drug abuse and illicit drug trade. He also called on members of the public to support the agency by providing timely and useful information.

The suspects are currently in NDLEA custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
