Police say 30-year-old suspect allegedly killed his girlfriend during an argument over HIV infection before hiding her body in his apartment toilet.

The men of the Nigerian police officer,  Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere.

The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Police Division at about 6:30 p.m. on September 21, 2026, after he was reportedly apprehended by an angry mob who had discovered the woman's body inside his apartment.

According to preliminary findings by the police, the incident occurred on September 19. Emmanuel allegedly struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle during an argument before she died from her injuries.

Police said the suspect allegedly wrapped the woman's body in nylon and concealed it inside the toilet of his apartment.

The hidden body was reportedly discovered after neighbours noticed a foul smell coming from the apartment. The neighbours allegedly forced the door open, found the remains and apprehended the suspect before police officers arrived.

Police operatives subsequently rescued Emmanuel from the mob and took him into custody.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the killing. Police said he claimed the argument that preceded the incident was over allegations concerning who had infected the other with HIV.

The victim's remains have been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.

The police also said efforts are underway to identify and notify the victim's relatives.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the case.

The commissioner further directed investigators to ensure that the suspect is arraigned in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

The police have not disclosed further details about the victim or the circumstances leading up to the alleged attack.
