Four-member team triumphs on debut in Shanghai, with two students clinching individual medals in global contest

Nigeria has recorded a landmark academic victory on the global stage, as a team of young students clinched the Gold Award in the Middle School category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.

Making their debut at the prestigious international competition, Team Nigeria outperformed top contenders from around the world to secure the top prize—marking the country’s first-ever appearance and victory at the event.

The winning team comprised Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf, all of whom qualified after outstanding performances at the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.

Adding to the country’s triumph, Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf, both students of Ar-Raheem International College in Ilorin, also earned individual medals for their exceptional spelling prowess.

The victory has sparked widespread celebration across Nigeria, with educators, parents, and public figures hailing the students for showcasing academic excellence and raising the nation’s profile in global education competitions.
