Son of Bishop David Oyedepo says directive came from God, insists ministry will focus solely on discipleship and spiritual growth.
Pastor Isaac Oyedepo, founder of Isaac Oyedepo Evangelistic Ministries and son of renowned cleric Bishop David Oyedepo, has sparked widespread reactions within Nigeria’s Christian community following a bold announcement concerning his new church in Abuja.
The young pastor revealed that no offerings will be collected during Sunday services at the Abuja fellowship, a move that sharply contrasts with long-standing practices in most churches across the country.
In a video released on January 11, Oyedepo explained that the decision was not a personal strategy but a clear instruction from God.
“I was specifically instructed not to collect offerings,” he said. “This ministry is about discipleship — equipping people to follow Jesus — not about money.”
The announcement has generated intense debate online and among church leaders, as offerings are traditionally considered a core part of Christian worship and church administration. However, Oyedepo maintained that his assignment differs from conventional ministry models.
According to him, the focus of the Abuja church will be purely spiritual, centered on teaching, mentorship, and raising committed followers of Christ.
“For this assignment, my focus must remain entirely on spiritual growth, he added.
