Mass crackdown hits HND programmes as institution uncovers widespread academic fraud during verification exercise
Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, has expelled 365 students for securing admission into the institution using falsified academic credentials, including fake National Diploma results and forged transcripts.
The decision followed a sweeping verification exercise that exposed widespread academic fraud across various Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, according to a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Yemi Ajibola.
Ajibola explained that the affected students were found to have submitted counterfeit documents during the admission and registration process in a bid to illegally gain entry into the polytechnic.
He said the action reflects the institution’s firm stance on academic integrity and its zero-tolerance policy toward examination and admission fraud.
“The expulsion followed a comprehensive verification exercise conducted on the credentials submitted by students during the admission and registration processes,” the statement read.
He added that the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to sanitise the academic environment and protect the credibility of qualifications issued by the institution.
Breakdown of the affected students shows the School of Communication and Information Technology was the hardest hit with 156 expulsions. It was followed by the School of Business and Management Studies with 117, School of Science and Technology with 54, School of Engineering with 36, while the School of Environmental Studies recorded two cases.
The Rector of MAPOLY, Dr Koye Jolaoso, warned prospective applicants against submitting fake credentials, stressing that the institution will continue to enforce strict admission screening procedures.
He said the move underscores the polytechnic’s commitment to restoring academic discipline, strengthening institutional credibility, and maintaining its reputation as a 47-year-old centre of excellence.
The management reiterated that the expelled students have forfeited their places in the institution and will not be reconsidered under any circumstance.
