Peter Obi Emerges Sole Presidential Aspirant as NDC Closes 2027 Form Sales

Party confirms ex-Anambra governor is the only contender after deadline, extends other nomination categories as screening process begins

Peter Obi has emerged as the only aspirant to purchase the 2027 presidential expression of interest and nomination forms of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the official closure of sales for the presidential ticket.

Party insiders confirmed that the former Anambra State governor stood unopposed at the deadline, making him the sole contender for the party’s presidential nomination as the window for form purchase shut.

The development comes weeks after Obi reportedly left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the NDC, marking a significant shift in the evolving 2027 political realignments.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC announced that while the sale of presidential forms has closed, the deadline for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly nominations has been extended by one week to May 24, 2026.

According to the party, screening of all aspirants will commence on May 19 and conclude on May 26, after which only successfully screened candidates will proceed to collect nomination forms.

The NDC further clarified that only aspirants who pass the screening stage will be eligible to continue in the nomination process, tightening its internal selection procedures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With no challenger emerging for the presidential ticket, Obi is now widely positioned as the party’s leading and likely consensus candidate going into the next phase of the primaries.
