Teen Girl Mistaken for Dead Wakes Up in Coffin at Her Own Funeral

Fifteen-year-old Yuleidy Ixcotoyac stunned grieving relatives when she began moving and suddenly sat up inside her coffin, hours after collapsing. No doctor had confirmed her death before the family arranged the wake.

A family’s grief turned into shock and celebration in Guatemala after a 15-year-old girl, believed to have died, suddenly regained consciousness inside her coffin during her own wake.

Yuleidy Ixcotoyac stunned mourners in the village of El Jocote when she began moving and eventually sat up, prompting relatives to rush to her aid as the atmosphere of mourning gave way to disbelief and cries of joy.

Her father, Abraham, an evangelical pastor, said the teenager lost consciousness on Saturday morning while he was driving her to a medical centre.

According to him, he became convinced that she had died after noticing that she was no longer breathing and being unable to feel a pulse at her wrists.

“I saw that she was no longer breathing and I couldn’t feel her pulse on her wrists. It was a very difficult situation for me. She did not go to hospital,” he said.

Believing his daughter was dead, Abraham purchased a coffin and returned home with her. However, no doctor had examined Yuleidy to confirm her death, and no death certificate was issued.

With families in Guatemala often arranging burials soon after a death, relatives organised a wake approximately eight hours after the teenager collapsed.

Friends and family members gathered in El Jocote to mourn what they believed was her untimely death. But the gathering took an extraordinary turn when her mother, Lesvia Ríos, noticed signs of movement inside the coffin.

Ríos said she had refused to accept that her daughter was dead, insisting throughout the ordeal that Yuleidy was still alive.

“I kept saying she was alive; she wasn’t dead,” she said.

Recalling the moment everything changed, the mother explained that she was crying over the coffin when relatives opened its viewing window and noticed that the teenager was moving.

“When I was crying on top of her casket, we opened the window and she was moving, she was waking up and suddenly she sat up,” Ríos said.

The stunned family immediately helped Yuleidy out of the coffin and gave her water as relatives struggled to process what they had witnessed. The scene, which had been filled with sorrow, quickly turned into one of relief and celebration.

For Yuleidy, the experience began with a frightening episode of sudden physical distress.

The teenager said she had experienced severe chest pain shortly before losing consciousness.

“My heart started hurting really badly, it felt heavy and then I blacked out, like I fainted,” she recalled.

She later expressed gratitude for being alive, saying she thanked God following the shocking experience.

While relatives described the incident as a miracle, the precise cause of Yuleidy’s collapse and subsequent apparent recovery remains unclear. The available account does not establish what medical condition, if any, caused her to lose consciousness or why her death was mistakenly assumed.

The incident also highlights the importance of obtaining professional medical confirmation before declaring someone dead, particularly when a person has collapsed and appears unresponsive.

Although the family’s relief was overwhelming, determining what happened to Yuleidy will require proper medical assessment, especially given her report of severe chest pain before losing consciousness.

For a family that had gathered to say goodbye to a teenage daughter, the unexpected moment she sat up inside her coffin transformed a day of mourning into one they are unlikely ever to forget.
