Alwan Hassan says loss of Kano strongman could weaken APC’s electoral strength as political realignments gather pace
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alwan Hassan, has raised concerns over the party’s political future, warning that it could face significant challenges if reports of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are confirmed.
Hassan, speaking during a television interview, described the reported move by the former Kano State governor as a major setback for the ruling party. He emphasized Kwankwaso’s enduring political influence, particularly in Kano State, which remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic electoral strongholds.
According to him, the potential loss of Kano’s support base could have far-reaching implications for the APC’s performance in the 2027 general elections. He stressed that Kano’s voting strength and political relevance make it a critical factor in determining national outcomes.
“Kano is a key state in Nigerian politics. Any shift in its political alignment could significantly impact election results,” Hassan noted.
Despite the warning, the remarks reflect Hassan’s personal assessment and not an official position of the APC leadership. The party has yet to issue any formal statement indicating internal concerns or confirming the reported defection.
Kwankwaso, a former presidential candidate and influential northern politician, has maintained a strong grassroots following over the years, particularly through his Kwankwasiyya movement.
The development comes amid growing political realignments and strategic repositioning by major actors ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties expected to intensify efforts to consolidate their bases and attract key figures.
However, such shifts could reshape alliances and redefine the political landscape in the coming months.
