Apple Pulls Telegram from App Store Over Abuse Content, Removes Over 300,000 Groups

Messaging platform removes offending material and bans user as it reports takedown of over 337,900 abusive groups and channels in 2026

Apple briefly removed messaging platform Telegram from its App Store after a review uncovered content that violated the company’s safety guidelines, in a move that underscores growing scrutiny of user-generated platforms.

According to Apple, the flagged content breached its rules on prohibited abusive material, prompting the temporary takedown of the app. The decision highlights the tech giant’s strict enforcement of its App Store policies, particularly around harmful and illegal content.

Telegram, however, acted quickly to resolve the issue. The company confirmed it removed the offending material and permanently banned the user responsible, leading to the app’s reinstatement on the App Store within a short period.

In a statement following the incident, Telegram said it has significantly intensified its moderation efforts in recent months. The platform disclosed that it has removed more than 337,900 groups and channels linked to abuse-related content so far in 2026 alone.

The company added that it continues to invest in stronger moderation systems to detect and eliminate harmful material, as pressure mounts on tech platforms to maintain safer digital environments.

The incident reflects the ongoing challenge faced by social and messaging platforms in balancing privacy, free expression, and the need to curb abusive or illegal content, especially as regulators and platform providers tighten oversight.
