Blazes broke out at two separate filling stations during petrol offloading operations in Kabo and Nassarawa LGAs, prompting safety warnings from the state fire service.

No fewer than 17 tricycles and two petrol tankers were destroyed in separate fire incidents at filling stations in Kano State on Tuesday night.

The incidents were confirmed in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi.

According to Abdullahi, the first fire outbreak occurred at about 8:45 p.m. at AA Ayagi Filling Station, located at Kanye Village along Gwarzo Road in Kabo Local Government Area.

“Our control room received a distress call at about 20:45 hours from one of our staff, Muhammad Wada Abdulsalam, reporting a fire incident at AA Ayagi Filling Station along Gwarzo Road. Firefighters from the Rijiyar Zaki division were immediately mobilised to the scene,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that upon arrival, firefighters found a fuel tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), bearing registration number XPB 999 FA and owned by AA Ayagi Company, engulfed in flames while offloading petrol.

The fire reportedly broke out after two compartments of the tanker had been discharged into an underground storage tank, while three remaining compartments, containing an estimated 5,000 litres of petroleum products, were still being offloaded.

The second incident occurred at Al-Wahida Nigeria Limited Filling Station at Rimin Kebe Karshen Kwalta in Nassarawa Local Government Area.

Abdullahi said the fire involved a petrol tanker belonging to BA Bello Company, with registration number KHX 29 XA, which was transporting approximately 45,000 litres of petroleum products.

“The fire started during the offloading process and destroyed the tanker truck head and part of the tanker body, while 17 tricycles, popularly known as Adaidaita Sahu, were completely burnt,” he added.

Reacting to the incidents, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged filling station operators and fuel tanker drivers to strictly comply with safety regulations during fuel offloading and the handling of flammable substances to prevent future occurrences.
