Panama Hit by 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake as Tsunami Warning Triggers Coastal Evacuations

The powerful tremor shook buildings, damaged structures and triggered emergency evacuations along parts of Panama’s coastline. A tsunami warning was later lifted, with no confirmed fatalities reported as authorities assessed the damage.

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Panama on Friday, October 9, 2026, shaking buildings, damaging structures and triggering tsunami warnings that prompted precautionary evacuations in coastal communities.

The earthquake sent residents and office workers rushing into the streets as buildings trembled, sparking fears of further damage and a possible tsunami.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at a depth of approximately 12.6 kilometres, with its epicentre near Pitaloza Arriba in south-central Panama, about 200 kilometres from the capital, Panama City.

The shallow depth of the tremor raised concerns about its potential impact on nearby communities, while reports of structural damage prompted authorities to begin assessing affected areas.

Aftershocks Follow Powerful Tremor

Several aftershocks were reported following the initial earthquake, including one measuring approximately magnitude 6.6, adding to concerns among residents and emergency responders.

Authorities continued monitoring seismic activity and inspecting buildings for possible damage as residents awaited further safety guidance.

The series of tremors heightened concerns about the possibility of additional shaking, particularly in areas already affected by the initial earthquake.

Tsunami Warning Prompts Coastal Evacuations

The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, with initial forecasts indicating that waves could reach up to three metres along parts of Panama’s coastline.

Emergency authorities urged residents in vulnerable coastal areas to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions while agencies monitored sea conditions and assessed the potential threat.

The warning raised fears of flooding and damage in coastal communities, where residents were advised to take precautions until the situation became clearer.

However, the tsunami threat was later declared to have passed, prompting authorities to lift the warning.

Airport Temporarily Closes as Panama Canal Continues Operations

The earthquake also disrupted some transportation operations, with Panama’s airport temporarily suspending activities before reopening.

Despite the disruption, the Panama Canal continued operating normally, according to the available reports.

Authorities had not confirmed any fatalities as of Friday evening. However, assessments of damaged buildings and infrastructure remained ongoing, while emergency agencies continued monitoring aftershocks and evaluating the earthquake’s overall impact.

The lifting of the tsunami warning eased immediate concerns, although residents in affected areas remained watchful as officials continued their response.
