Asokoro High Court convicts Maryam Adewumi of culpable homicide, warns of deadly consequences of violent relationship conflicts
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting in Asokoro has sentenced 22-year-old cleaner, Maryam Adewumi, to 20 years imprisonment for the killing of her boyfriend, Shallom Oliseh.
Adewumi was prosecuted by the Commissioner of Police on a charge of culpable homicide following the incident that led to the death of the 35-year-old victim. After reviewing the evidence presented during the trial, the court found her guilty and handed down the sentence.
According to informations, the conviction underscores the severe legal consequences attached to unlawful killings, even when they arise from personal or domestic disputes.
The case highlights the dangers of unresolved conflicts in intimate relationships, where arguments can escalate into violence with fatal outcomes. Legal analysts note that culpable homicide remains a grave offence under Nigerian law, attracting heavy penalties upon conviction.
Beyond the legal implications, the judgment has reignited concerns over intimate partner violence, particularly among young people. Observers stress the need for better conflict resolution mechanisms, emotional regulation, and early intervention to prevent disputes from spiraling into tragedy.
