FG Releases Over N38bn to 166 Tertiary Institutions to Revamp Infrastructure

Universities will receive N28.5bn, while polytechnics get N5.8bn and colleges of education N4.7bn under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund.

The Federal Government has released N38.93bn to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to tackle infrastructure deficits and improve teaching and learning facilities.

The intervention, implemented under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund, covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education, with universities receiving the largest share of the allocation.

The Federal Ministry of Finance disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by its Head of Media, Efe Ovuakporie, noting that the funds would support approved projects in the beneficiary institutions.

“The Federal Government has disbursed N38.93bn to 166 public tertiary institutions nationwide under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund,” the statement said.

Universities Get Largest Share

According to the ministry, universities will receive N28.5bn, while polytechnics have been allocated N5.8bn and colleges of education N4.7bn.

The allocation breakdown shows that universities account for approximately 73.2 per cent of the total intervention, making them the largest beneficiaries of the funding.

Polytechnics will receive about 14.9 per cent of the total, while colleges of education account for approximately 12.1 per cent.

The funding is expected to support projects aimed at improving campus infrastructure, upgrading learning facilities and addressing some of the persistent challenges confronting public higher education institutions.

Move Targets Infrastructure Deficits

The ministry said the intervention was designed to address longstanding infrastructure gaps in public tertiary institutions and support the implementation of agreements reached between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Public universities and other tertiary institutions have faced persistent challenges involving inadequate facilities and the growing demand for improved learning environments.

The latest disbursement is intended to help beneficiary institutions implement approved projects and strengthen the conditions under which students learn and academic staff carry out their duties.

However, the impact of the intervention will depend on how effectively the funds are deployed and whether the approved projects translate into tangible improvements in classrooms, laboratories and other essential facilities.

The government’s stated objective is to revitalise public tertiary education through targeted investment in infrastructure and learning resources across the country.
