Four Killed, Six Injured as Container Truck Crushes Passenger Bus on Lagos Bridge

The fatal crash occurred on Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway after a container-laden truck reportedly lost control while travelling uphill, while two other truck accidents were recorded in Lagos on Wednesday.

Four people have been killed and six others injured after a container-laden truck overturned onto a commercial passenger bus on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.

The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, when a truck carrying a 20-foot container collided with a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number GME-589 ZU, leaving several passengers trapped beneath the wreckage.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing the impact as severe.

According to preliminary findings by emergency responders, the truck was travelling uphill on the bridge at excessive speed when it collided with the passenger bus.

The truck driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid the collision, causing the heavy vehicle and its container to topple onto the bus.

The crash claimed the lives of four adult men, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Six other adult men sustained injuries of varying degrees.

Following the incident, LASEMA personnel worked alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the area, provide first aid and evacuate the injured victims to Epe General Hospital for medical treatment.

Emergency responders also arranged for a private crane to lift the overturned truck and container, allowing the recovery team to remove the bodies of the deceased.

At the time of the agency's statement, recovery operations were still underway, while traffic control measures had been introduced to reduce the risk of further accidents and manage congestion along the busy road.

The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

Two Other Truck Accidents Reported in Lagos

The Berger Bridge tragedy was one of three truck-related road incidents attended to by LASEMA teams across Lagos in the early hours of Wednesday.

In a separate incident at about 4:09 a.m., a truck with registration number KTU-940XT crashed into a solar-powered streetlight pole near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road.

The vehicle reportedly mounted the road median after striking the pole, obstructing traffic and damaging both the streetlight infrastructure and the front section of the truck.

LASEMA attributed the incident to reckless driving. No casualties were recorded.

Responders diverted traffic to prevent further collisions and deployed the agency's heavy-duty recovery equipment, known as Elephant, to remove the truck. The vehicle was subsequently taken to Abattoir Police Station for investigation and safekeeping, while the affected section of the road was cleared and reopened.

Truck Driving Against Traffic Causes Another Collision

In another incident, LASEMA's Beta Team responded to a collision involving a DAF truck, with registration number SMK 795 XY, and a Toyota Corolla, registered as AKD 169 EA, at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along LASU-Igando Road.

The agency said a broken-down truck on the opposite side of the road had contributed to traffic congestion when the DAF truck allegedly travelled against the direction of traffic and collided with the Corolla.

The collision left part of the road blocked, further disrupting movement in the area.

Although no death was recorded, the Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate.

The damaged car was towed to Igando Police Station, while LASEMA deployed its Super Metro recovery equipment to move the DAF truck to a lay-by. Recovery operations were ongoing when the agency issued its statement.

LASEMA Warns Motorists Against Reckless Driving

Following the incidents, Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists to obey speed limits, avoid driving against traffic and refrain from dangerous manoeuvres that could put other road users at risk.

He also advised drivers to ensure their vehicles were mechanically sound before embarking on journeys, stressing the importance of responsible driving in preventing avoidable road crashes.

Residents were encouraged to report emergencies through Lagos State's toll-free emergency numbers, 767 and 112.

The deadly Berger Bridge crash has once again highlighted the dangers posed by reckless driving and the risks associated with heavy-duty vehicles sharing busy roads with passenger buses and other motorists.
